Proceedings of the Fábos Conference on Landscape and Greenway Planning

The Bologna Declaration, a new European two-cycle degree system was adopted in Finnish universities in 2005 (The Bologna Process...2010). The W5W2 project (2007-2009) supported the implementation of the Bologna process in the Finnish Universities in order to strengthen their the positions in the European Higher Education Area and to strengthen quality assurance in universities and polytechnics (Five Years, Two Degrees…2010). The project has concentrated on cumulative learning. Knowledge should accumulate in the long-term memory during the studies. In landscape planning education the aim has been to pedagogically support this cumulative process.

Since 2005 there has been a co-operation between Aalto …

Working With Communities: U.S National Park Service Community Assistance In Corridor Planning, Charles L. Tracy

Proceedings of the Fábos Conference on Landscape and Greenway Planning

Shifting Leadership to the Local and Regional Level: Changes in federal land protection priorities and U.S. demographics have prompted a growing realization within the U.S. National Park Service (NPS) and other federal land managing agencies that they need to be more creative in partnering with local communities, including those with underserved populations, to engage them more fully in the protection and stewardship of cultural landscapes, river corridors, and recreational trails and greenways. This increased recognition of the need for partnership, especially in the protection of linear corridors, is underscored by the introduction of “Treasured Landscapes” (DOI, 2010) a new federal …

Importance Of Gis Databases In Management And Planning Of Public Green Spaces – Case Study Of The Budapest Zoo And Botanical Garden, Katalin Takács, Vince Zsigmond 2010 Corvinus University of Budapest, Department of Garden Art

Importance Of Gis Databases In Management And Planning Of Public Green Spaces – Case Study Of The Budapest Zoo And Botanical Garden, Katalin Takács, Vince Zsigmond

Proceedings of the Fábos Conference on Landscape and Greenway Planning

The development and long term quality maintenance of public green spaces requires various kinds of knowledge. Most of the onsite information (development history, current state of the garden, ground plan, plant stock, etc.) has to be in the mind of the specialist in charge; however, with the growing quantity and complexity of the data there is a limit to traditional personal expertise. Developing and managing GIS databases creates new assets for documentation (data analysis, queries, reporting, etc.) as well as further practical applications based on them: supplying data for constructors, decision makers and visitors; supporting decisions with accurate derived information; …

Responsive Urbanism: Sustainable Development Strategies For Small Communities With An Inter-Cultural Focus, Christine Scott Thomson, Kim Thornton, Gunther Koppelhuber

Proceedings of the Fábos Conference on Landscape and Greenway Planning

This essay explores the development of a landscape design method referred to as Responsive Urbanism, the intention of which is to reverse the negative effects of globalization currently reordering the physical and social fabric of small communities. Responsive Urbanism utilizes a landscape based framework and systems focus that emphasizes the following series of disciplines (1) ecological networks in the natural world, (2) fabric of the built environment, (3) dynamics between land and transportation, and (4) socially networked decision making. The method also integrates community design events and cross-cultural collaboration, and concludes with multi-scaled design development that makes ecological integrity and …

Leisurescape: A Pan-European Spatial Assessment Of Tourism Between Cities, Nature And Landscape, Dirk M. Wascher, Rini Schuiling, Nick Hazendonk, Bart Looise

Proceedings of the Fábos Conference on Landscape and Greenway Planning

Part of the project initiative Landscape and leisure, launched by the Dutch Government Advisor on the Landscape, is the development of a European map on the basis of a standard methodological approach for presenting the spatial relations between leisure and tourism on the one hand, and landscape and nature conservation other hand. Due to the increasing need of European institutions for harmonized, reliable data on the state and trends of the environment – and meanwhile on the allencompassing policy domain of sustainability which includes the social, economic and environmental dimension – the production of European data sets has become a …

'Al-Mouled' As A Cultural Greenway: A New Developing Tool In The Egyptian Context, Hossam Fathy Ahmed, M.S.C. Hoda Salah Ismail

Proceedings of the Fábos Conference on Landscape and Greenway Planning

Egypt’s heritage is of worldwide interest and importance due to its continuity over a period of more than five thousand years. It encompasses various aspects of human civilization and represents a cultural as well as a natural heritage of national and international value. This wealth of archaeological sites, architecture, arts and folklore reflects the many stages of Egypt’s rich past, giving it the rich diversity that we see now. But, unfortunately, this context is deteriorating due to massive development trends, unplanned urban expansion, unclear planning strategies, lack of awareness of importance of landscape planning in conserving this context on both …

Greenways And The Urban Form: City Of Ankara, Turkey, Mukerrem Arslan, Emin Baris, Elmas Erdogan, Zuhal Dilaver

Proceedings of the Fábos Conference on Landscape and Greenway Planning

A greenway is a linear open space established along either a natural corridor, such as a riverfront, stream valley, or ridgeline, or overland along a railroad right-of-way converted to recreational use, a canal, scenic rood, or other route. It is any natural or landscaped course for pedestrian or bicycle passage. An open-space connector linking parks, nature reserves, cultural features, or historic sites with each other and with populated areas (Little, 1995; Miller et al., 1998; Viles and Rosier, 2001).

A greenway is a connector; a pattern of protected lands linking other protected lands such as natural features or historic sites …

Landscape Planning Aspects Of Municipal Creekside Greenways In Hungary, Ildikó Réka Báthory-Nagy

Proceedings of the Fábos Conference on Landscape and Greenway Planning

As a researcher in landscape architecture, I focus on creekside landscapes: their special characteristics, natural and man-governed processes and abilities to recover. The general aim of my research work is to find better landscape planning and design solutions to improve Hungarian creek valleys’ functional, ecological and aesthetic conditions. As a practitioner, besides setting guidelines for restoration, I am engaged in landscape architectural projects focusing on the recreational and ecological development of urban creeksides.

In my present paper I would like to focus on some characteristics of landscape planning that are the elementary determinants of creekside greenways in Hungary. Through an …

Ecological Networks: From Regional To Metropolitan Strategies. The Northern Region Of Portugal And Oporto Metropolitan Area, Teresa Andresen 2010 CIBIO - University of Porto, Portugal

Ecological Networks: From Regional To Metropolitan Strategies. The Northern Region Of Portugal And Oporto Metropolitan Area, Teresa Andresen

Proceedings of the Fábos Conference on Landscape and Greenway Planning

Planning for change across landscape scales in Northern Portugal through the definition of ecological networks has proved to be a challenging exercise. The outputs produced between 2004 and 2009 by CIBIO, a research unit at the University of Porto, demonstrate the complementarities of landscape planning at the regional and metropolitan scales and between regional ecological networks for environmental protection and a metropolitan network of parks.

Through the five years of research, we were moved by the idea of providing solutions for better living in the ‘rural-urban compact’ where the Porto Metropolitan Area is embedded. Gutman (2007, pp. 385) defends that …

Trends Of Landscape Architecture In Hungary In The ‘70s, Eszter Karlócainé Bakay

Proceedings of the Fábos Conference on Landscape and Greenway Planning

The history of landscape architecture in the seventies is part of a larger topic which covers the history of Hungarian landscape architecture from the 50-s to the end of Socialist era. The strong political pressure which was so typical in all fields of life in these periods, was determining in landscape architecture as well.

The era has not been researched yet, since it hasn’t been enough long ago to be considered as a history. The parks built at this time are disappearing due to park renovations, alterations or functional changes. These works are not protected yet; the officials of historic …

Landscape Painting Adding A Cultural Value To The Dutch Countryside, Ernst J. Bos 2010 LEI Wageningen University and Research Centre, the Netherlands

Landscape Painting Adding A Cultural Value To The Dutch Countryside, Ernst J. Bos

Proceedings of the Fábos Conference on Landscape and Greenway Planning

In this article it is argued that cultural values should be included in policy making on the Dutch countryside. Since the seventeenth century the Dutch landscape had been a valued subject for art painters. This inheritance provides our rural areas a unique cultural value. The focus of this article is the region surrounding The Hague, where painters from the so-called Hague School had brought a large number of sites to their canvases. This group of painters was mainly active in the second half of the nineteenth century. For this study, various sites have been located that had been painted by …

Is The French View Of Greenways Avant-Garde Or Déjà-Vu?, Laure Cormier, Monique Toublanc, Jacques Baudry 2010 PhD student UP Landscape, AGROCAMPUS OUEST, centre d’Angers, Institut national d’horticulture et de paysage, France

Is The French View Of Greenways Avant-Garde Or Déjà-Vu?, Laure Cormier, Monique Toublanc, Jacques Baudry

Proceedings of the Fábos Conference on Landscape and Greenway Planning

“Greenway” has become trendy in the French planners’ vocabulary. Indeed, this term has many meanings, related to both the environmental and social characteristics of a territory. It carries many positive cultural values. There are not one but several types of greenways in according to specific area (urban, peri-urban, and rural) with different objectives (recreation, nature conservation, human well being). Nowadays, the French term for greenways is “trame verte”. This expression is a planning concept dealing mostly with private land.

The objective of the paper is threefold. First, we shall look at the changes in the content of “greenways” in this …

A Sustainability Evaluation And Dynamic Modeling Tool For Landscape And Urban Planning Policy Scenarios, Chingwen Cheng, Timothy O. Randhir

Proceedings of the Fábos Conference on Landscape and Greenway Planning

Incorporating sustainability principles into urban development is often complex involving strong interaction between ecosystem components and development goals. As identified in the Brundtland Commissions report (UN, 1987), sustainability has gained much attention in planning aimed at balancing current needs without depleting resources and ecological services available for future generations. While the decision-making process is embedded in a social framework, political sustainability depends on collective decisions and citizens’ preferences related to public policies (Munda, 2006; Webster, 1998). In recent decade, the sustainability concept has been adopted in landscape and urban planning. Specific approaches include assessing abiotic, biotic, and cultural (ABC) resources …

The Planning Principles Of Standing Waters’ Shore Zones Demonstrated By The Example Of Velence-Lake, Zsombor Boromisza 2010 Corvinus University of Budapest, Department of Landscape Preservation and Reclamation

The Planning Principles Of Standing Waters’ Shore Zones Demonstrated By The Example Of Velence-Lake, Zsombor Boromisza

Proceedings of the Fábos Conference on Landscape and Greenway Planning

The importance of investigating shore zones is justified, on one hand, by the numerous functions the land zones have (that of bio filter, preserving the assortment of species, in addition to being habitat, ecological network’s unit, as well as destination and attracting factor for recreational and tourism opportunities etc.). On the other hand, however, many interests are crossing as to shore zones, the increased utilization’s demands may – in many cases – limit or cease the above mentioned functions, e.g. as a result of regulating the water level, the shore, the water-course or the built-in shore zone . Having in …

Landscape Planning Of Fringe City Zones - The Case Studies Of Belgrade And Vrnjačka Spa, Tijana Crnčević PhD, Jelena Živanović Miljković MSc 2010 Institute of Architecture and Urban & Spatial Planning of Serbia

Landscape Planning Of Fringe City Zones - The Case Studies Of Belgrade And Vrnjačka Spa, Tijana Crnčević Phd, Jelena Živanović Miljković Msc

Proceedings of the Fábos Conference on Landscape and Greenway Planning

The fringe city zones represent spaces which make the connection between city and nature, where urban areas cross into rural, or to the natural areas. The places where in the last decades, because of the rapid development, these zones shows the diverse of the land use and with lot of surfaces subjected to the constant changes (Friedberger, 2000) leading into destruction of the landscape. From the administrative point of view, the fringe zone starts outside the border of the Master plan (MP). The contemporary practice of urban planning confer the need to harmonize the interest of the city and the …

Frederick Law Olmsted’S Public Parks, Parkways And Their Influence On The Continent, Luca Csepely-Knorr

Proceedings of the Fábos Conference on Landscape and Greenway Planning

The connections between European and American park design have been the subject of a considerable body of research (e.g. Bowe, 1995). However, relatively little has been written on the extent to which European public parks have exerted an influence on the development of American urban green spaces, and the reciprocal effect of these open spaces on European park design.

The main goal of this paper is to examine how Frederick Law Olmsted’s European travels influenced his planning concepts, what he considered as his precedents, and how he put these in practical uses. Adopting a continental point of view, the focus …

Greenway Development Possibilities In Hungray; Flood Protection Banks And Abandoned Railway Lines In Greenway Development, Attila Csemez 2010 Corvinus University of Budapest, Department of Landscape Planning and Regional Development

Greenway Development Possibilities In Hungray; Flood Protection Banks And Abandoned Railway Lines In Greenway Development, Attila Csemez

Proceedings of the Fábos Conference on Landscape and Greenway Planning

Greenways, as their name suggests, are linear elements. The essence of a greenway is that it connects and separates. A greenway system means a continuous, unbroken connection of green spaces. In Hungary the greenway system could become complete if existing and proposed greenways could be connected at the following locations:

⎯ Along the Danube and Tisza flood prevention banks

⎯ Along main routes

⎯ On both sides of the rivers and smaller streams

⎯ On the edges of settlements

A greenway system would provide ecological harmony and a determining landscape structure for the Carpathian basin, as well as strengthen its …
