Funding Sustainable And Humanitarian Architectural Projects, Joslyn R. Olsen 2010 Utah State University

Funding Sustainable And Humanitarian Architectural Projects, Joslyn R. Olsen

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The purpose of this project is to identify sources of funding for sustainable building projects and create a catalog of the findings. This study targeted the nonprofit, humanitarian, and private organization sectors with the goal to encourage subsequent projects that may positively impact the quality of life for people in need.

It has been predicted that in the next 25 years 75% of America's built environment will be either new or renovated. The downside is that new buildings cause substantial ecological damage due to the extraction of materials and account for as much as 40% of all greenhouse gases. As …

Historical Restoration Of Usu's Passive Recreation Garden, Jeremy Nelson 2010 Utah State University

Historical Restoration Of Usu's Passive Recreation Garden, Jeremy Nelson

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

Laval Morris was the founder of the Landscape Architecture and Environmental Planning

department at USU. He is an important figure in the history of our university the state and

intermountain region. One of the last remaining landscapes that he designed for the university is

USU’s Passive Recreation Garden.

Over time the garden has become degraded, overrun by invasive plants and was almost

completely destroyed in 2004. It is important to preserve and restore this garden because of its

importance to Laval and to the history LAEP at Utah State University.

My thesis is a documentation of the gardens importance and …

Planning For Closure Of The Logan City/Cache County Landfill And Surrounding Landscape, Kristofor Lee Kvarfordt 2010 Utah State University

Planning For Closure Of The Logan City/Cache County Landfill And Surrounding Landscape, Kristofor Lee Kvarfordt

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Planning for closure requires in depth analysis into many operational, environmental, and social factors. Ideally, the planning process should resolve as many of the technical, social, and aesthetic requirements as possible by systematically addressing the various elements that influence the final design. This research identified the significant issues related to planning for the end use of the current Logan landfill after it reaches capacity in 18-20 years and the associated lagoons and wetlands. The current closure plan calls for simply recontouring the landfill to stabilize the slopes, then revegetating. The location of the site has serious implications for environmental impact …

The Soundscape Planning Of Mountain Park In Holyoke, Massachusetts, Brian Clayton Giggey 2010 University of Massachusetts - Amherst

The Soundscape Planning Of Mountain Park In Holyoke, Massachusetts, Brian Clayton Giggey

Landscape Architecture & Regional Planning Masters Projects

The soundscape of a place is simply its acoustic environment, with the listener situated within the center of the sonic landscape (Porteous and Mastin, 1985). Soundscapes can be adjusted with proper planning, site analysis and design. Often overlooked by design and planning professionals, sounds are a part of the biological, social and spiritual context which needs to be considered if good outdoor environments are to be provided (Hedfors, 2003). With its close proximity to the Whiting Street Reservoir and Holyoke Range, Mountain Park provides a terrific opportunity for an outdoor amphitheater, a cultural resource deeply needed in Western Massachusetts. Significant …

Greenspace Conservation Planning Framework For Urban Regions Based On A Forest Bird-Habitat Relationship Study And The Resilience Thinking, Sadahisa Kato 2010 University of Massachusetts Amherst

Greenspace Conservation Planning Framework For Urban Regions Based On A Forest Bird-Habitat Relationship Study And The Resilience Thinking, Sadahisa Kato

Open Access Dissertations

The research involves first conducting a "case study" of ecological data and applying the results, together with the resilience concept, to the development of a greenspace conservation planning framework for urban regions. The first part of the research investigates the relationship between forest bird abundance and the surrounding landscape characteristics, especially, forest area and its spatial configuration in urban regions at multiple scales. The results are similar for simple and multiple regression analyses across three scales. The percentage of forest cover in a landscape is positively correlated with bird abundance with some thresholds. Overall, the percentage of forest cover in …

Utilizing Jicarilla Apache Knowledge To Enrich The Watershed Watch Program Curriculum For The Benefit Of The Jicarilla Apache Youth, Rebecca Rae

Architecture and Planning ETDs

The thesis explores the notions of decolonization, Indigenous knowledge, and empirical knowledge of place as a foundation for implementing Jicarilla Apache knowledge into the Watershed Watch Program. Two lesson plans were created utilizing Jicarilla Apache stories and knowledge to teach Jicarilla Apache youth about the water cycle, plants, and culture. By connecting Indigenous teachings with western scientific teachings Jicarilla Apache youth will gain a greater understanding of the natural environment with relevance to their heritage.

Community And Place: A Study Of Four African American Benevolent Societies And Their Cemeteries, Kimberly Martin 2010 Clemson University

Community And Place: A Study Of Four African American Benevolent Societies And Their Cemeteries, Kimberly Martin

All Theses

Located on Charleston's Neck, immediately west of Magnolia Cemetery's main entrance, are a number of small cemeteries created by a variety of ethnicities and religions. These small cemeteries all possess the same physical orientation, giving no indication that the sites were created by differing groups. Among these are Friendly Union Cemetery, Brown Fellowship Cemetery, Humane and Friendly Cemetery, and Unity and Friendship Cemetery. All four cemeteries were created just before the outbreak of the Civil War by Free People of Color who organized themselves into benevolent societies. Free People of Color were African Americans who were not enslaved but did …

Proceedings Of The 2009 Nrc Federal Facilities Council/James Madison University Symposium On Protecting Large Facility Complexes;, George H. Baker, Cheryl E. Wilkins

George H Baker

Large, complex facilities pose unique protection challenges involving multidisciplinary expertise and collaboration among government, academia, and the private sector. The symposium served as a forum for sharing experiences in dealing with large facility catastrophic events and risk management. The symposium was organized based on the value of interaction among different people representing diverse disciplines. In many instances, such interactions lead to solutions that would not have been developed within disciplinary stovepipes. The venue was divided into three panels addressing physical security, cyber security, and real facility case studies. We were also privileged to have three keynote speakers including Dr. Charles …

Las Marchas Blancas, Fernando Carrión Mena 2010 FLACSO, Facultad Latinoamericana de Ciencias Sociales. Sede Ecuador

Impediments To And Opportunities For Fulfillment Of The Rational Comprehensive Intent Of The National Environmental Policy Act, Brian P. McMullen 2010 University of Nebraska at Lincoln

Impediments To And Opportunities For Fulfillment Of The Rational Comprehensive Intent Of The National Environmental Policy Act, Brian P. Mcmullen

Community and Regional Planning Program: Student Projects and Theses

The National Environmental Policy Act of 1960 (NEPA) initiated the study and practice of environmental impact analysis. Upon passage, NEPA transformed the process in which the federal government plans, seeks input on, and documents major projects of environmental significance. While NEPA has surely affected project-level incremental actions, its rational comprehensive mandate as expressed in Title II of the statute has remained largely unfulfilled. Neglect of Title II has occurred as a result of broad language in NEPA that is difficult for federal judges to interpret and administrators to implement. Political interference with the President’s Council on Environmental Quality (CEQ) has …

Finanzas Sub-Nacionales, Fernando Carrión Mena 2010 FLACSO, Facultad Latinoamericana de Ciencias Sociales. Sede Ecuador

Designing For An Aging Population, Allison Shives 2010 Stephen F Austin State University

Designing For An Aging Population, Allison Shives

Undergraduate Research Conference

Aging starts at birth and continues throughout life. As people age, they need to continue to live a happy life. A designer’s job is to design a facility that will encourage an independent lifestyle while providing the help and community involvement aging requires. The design solution should meet the aging population’s desire to age in place. An assisted living facility allows older adults to live independently while being surrounded by a support group and events that promote an active lifestyle which is conducive to physical and mental wellbeing.

Blending Architecture With Nature: The Old Man In The Mountain, Rick Hamme 2010 Roger Williams University

Blending Architecture With Nature: The Old Man In The Mountain, Rick Hamme

Architecture Theses

The project is centered on the blending of tectonics, social context and nature in order to create a piece of architecture that becomes part of nature and part of the social fabric of the area. The site is located at the base of the Old Man in the mountain in Franconia notch, NH. It is nestled in a valley within the White Mountain National Forest. The Old Man fell off the cliff face in 2003 but for the purposes of the project I will assume that a proposed design for a replacement made of steel and glass will be built. …

Ritsy: Flat-Pack Furniture For The Urban Nomad, Emily D. Fleming 2010 University of Nebraska - Lincoln

Ritsy: Flat-Pack Furniture For The Urban Nomad, Emily D. Fleming

Interior Design Program: Theses

Today modern technology has allowed us the choice of vast geographical locations for living and working. About 1 in 6 Americans move each year. The highest mobility rates are found for young adults, ages 20 to 24 who were associated with over one third of the entire moving population, in a single year. (Hansen, 2008) The Americans of today enduring this behavior pattern are termed Urban Nomads. The ideals of such a person and behavior rest in the ability to live simply for the sake of mobility. The combination of our economy today, the exceedingly important environmental issues that arise, …

Slow Time: Reading The Work Of Scarpa, Marc J. Neveu 2010 California Polytechnic State University - San Luis Obispo

Slow Time: Reading The Work Of Scarpa, Marc J. Neveu

Architecture

In the mid 1980s Italo Calvino gave the Eliot Norton Lectures at Harvard University. In his third talk on “Quickness” he explained, “I do not wish to say that quickness is a value in itself. Narrative time can also be delaying, cyclic, or motionless. In any case, a story is an operation carried out on the length of time involved, an enchantment that acts on the passing of time, either contracting or dilating it.” Umberto Eco, a decade later, referenced Calvino in the third of his own lectures at Harvard entitled “Lingering in the Woods.” In that essay, Eco described …

Determination Of Material Emission Signatures By Ptr-Ms And Their Correlations With Odor Assessments By Human Subjects, Kwanghoon Han 2010 BEESL Lab., Syracuse University

Determination Of Material Emission Signatures By Ptr-Ms And Their Correlations With Odor Assessments By Human Subjects, Kwanghoon Han

Kwanghoon Han

The objectives of this study were to determine volatile organic compound (VOC) emission signatures of nine typical building materials by using proton transfer reaction-mass spectrometry (PTR-MS) and to explore the correlation between the PTR-MS measurements and the measurements of acceptability by human subjects. VOC emissions from each material were measured in a 50-l small-scale chamber. Chamber air was sampled by PTR-MS to determine emission signatures. Sorbent tube sampling and TD-GC/MS analysis were also performed to identify the major VOCs emitted and to compare the resulting data with the PTR-MS emission signatures. The data on the acceptability of air quality assessed …
