IN 1985, STUDENT’S AT CRANBROOK UNIVERSITY CREATED THREE ARCHITECTURAL MACHINES FOR THE VENICE BIENNALE. THE THREE MACHINES WERE LOST IN A FIRE IN VENICE. THE ONLY REMNANTS OF THE MACHINES THAT ARE LEFT ARE PICTURES FROM THE BIENNALE. THIS PROJECT FOCUSED ON THE READING MACHINE, ONE OF THE THREE MACHINES THAT WAS DESTROYED. IN AN ATTEMPT TO BETTER UNDERSTAND THESE MACHINES AND THEIR ROLE IN ARCHITECTURAL DISCOURSE, WE SET OUT TO SEE WHAT WE COULD LEARN FROM RECONSTRUCTING THESE MACHINES.

Identity And Urban Design: The Path To Meaningfulness In The City Of Concepción., Laura Yazmin Rodriguez

In her research leading to this article, Laura Rodriguez studied the urban design and place making qualities of the University of Concepción campus in Chile. Based on interviews with a select group of experts and field observations, the results indicate that the campus' strong meaning within the city image is partly due to its original conception as an overall consistent project and as part of the city grid and life.

The building, named Gabe’s Tower after owner and public figure Gabe Fiorella, was once an icon of Owensboro. Unfortunately, due to population growth southward and the opening of a rival hotel downtown (The Executive Inn), Gabe’s Tower was unable to remain open. It has since undergone many different ownerships, each of which have struggled to remain profitable. The building has remained vacant for years and therefore has been subjected to becoming a location for crime. This has produced a very negative image for the building and the surrounding area. This thesis is concerned with the question of how America’s citizen soldiers are remembered and how their services can be interpreted through monuments and memorials. The paper discusses the concept of memory and the functions of memorialization. It explores whether and how monuments and memorials portray the difficulties, hardships, horror, costs, and consequences of armed combat. The political motivations behind the design, formation and establishment of the edifices are also probed. The paper considers the Vietnam War monuments and memorials erected by Americans and Vietnam expatriates in New Orleans, Louisiana, and examines their illustrative and educational usefulness. Digital data contributes to an increasingly alienated aspect of our infrastructure. The complex practices of the Internet produce highly specified, engineered objects. Though their forms are ‘optimized,’ their intentions are not: the two primary considerations for the development of the infrastructure of the Internet are energy and security. Each category presents its own deliberations, but both often produce non-architectural, infrastructural elements beyond public visibility. The hidden infrastructure of data storage and mining (the indexing and analysis of data and traffic) produces spaces outside the agency of normative architectural discourse.
