Participatory Project Management For Improved Disaster Resilience, Lynn Crawford, Craig Langston, Bhishna Bajracharya 2014 Bond University

Participatory Project Management For Improved Disaster Resilience, Lynn Crawford, Craig Langston, Bhishna Bajracharya

Craig Langston

Purpose – Disaster response and recovery is implemented through multiple projects with traditional project management approaches criticised as too time consuming and inflexible in circumstances of high uncertainty, requiring rapid reaction for multiple stakeholders. This research aims to understand the role of project and stakeholder management in the management of disasters as an opening for identifying improved disaster resilience opportunities using participatory project management approaches. Design/methodology/approach – Using the 2011 Queensland floods as a case study, the positioning of project management in disaster management discourse was investigated through summative content analysis. Findings – Results demonstrate that project and stakeholder engagement are ...

Developing A Sustainable Campus Through Community Engagement: An Empirical Study, Linda Too, Bhishna Bajracharya, Isara Khanjanasthiti

Bhishna Bajracharya

Sustainability is increasingly a basic tenet within the organisational philosophy of many universities. While those universities that have a sustainability strategy have largely focused on operational improvements, the engagement of staff and students is equally important for creating a sustainable campus. This paper develops a 6-P community engagement framework for promoting eco-centric practices within university campuses. The objective of the study is to apply the framework to a university community in order to establish the validity of this framework. To this end, interviews with staff and students at Bond University were undertaken. The interviews reveal that the 6-P framework is ...

Mollifying The Muses: An Exploration Of Conflict In The Life And Works Of Iannis Xenakis, Davis S. Butner 2014 University of Pennsylvania

Mollifying The Muses: An Exploration Of Conflict In The Life And Works Of Iannis Xenakis, Davis S. Butner

CUREJ - College Undergraduate Research Electronic Journal

The early life of Iannis Xenakis, a modern day Renaissance scholar who would come to redefine the limits of musical composition and sound-driven spatial design in the 21st century, was overshadowed by adversity, conflict and alienation. Fleeing from his home country in 1947 after a nearly fatal wound to the face during the Greek Revolution, Xenakis' newfound life and career in the atelier of French architect Le Corbusier allowed for the budding engineer to explore a collective passion for music and mathematics within his work. Nevertheless, just as a giant facial scar would stand as a permanent physical symbol for ...

A Fuzzy Approach For Adaptive Reuse Selection Of Industrial Buildings In Hong Kong, Yongtao Tan, Li-Yin Shen, Craig Langston 2014 Hong Kong Polytechnic University

A Fuzzy Approach For Adaptive Reuse Selection Of Industrial Buildings In Hong Kong, Yongtao Tan, Li-Yin Shen, Craig Langston

Craig Langston

With rapid economic development and restructuring, there are an increasing number of aged or obsolete buildings in large cities, such as Hong Kong. Adaptive reuse of these buildings provides an alternative for property stakeholders towards more sustainable practices instead of redevelopment or destruction. Adaptive reuse can also make great contributions to sustainable development by reducing construction waste and saving natural resources. As a result of industrial restructuring, manufacturing plants were migrated from Hong Kong to Mainland China during the 1980s and 1990s. Many industrial buildings then became vacant or under-utilised. Adaptive reuse of these industrial buildings is considered a viable ...

Havana’S Urban Agriculture: Productive Land-Scapes Within A City’S Crumbling Infrastructure, Carey Clouse 2014 University of Massachusetts - Amherst

Havana’S Urban Agriculture: Productive Land-Scapes Within A City’S Crumbling Infrastructure, Carey Clouse

Carey Clouse

When Cuba found itself abruptly cutoff from trade with Soviet bloc in 1989, the country spun into an economic crisis of unprecedented severity. Suddenly lacking the oil, pesticides, and machinery with which to grow crops, and without access to the imported food that had previously sustained it, Cuba’s foodshed suddenly caved. Nearly twenty-five years later, this food crisis has vanished almost as swiftly as it arrived, in no small part due to the country’s innovative and widespread urban food production efforts. This research addresses the urban design framework that Cuba created in order to support urban agriculture initiatives ...

A Comparison Of American, Canadian, And European Home Energy Performance In Heating Dominated – Moist Climates Based On Building Codes, Stephanie M. Berkland 2014 University of Massachusetts Amherst

A Comparison Of American, Canadian, And European Home Energy Performance In Heating Dominated – Moist Climates Based On Building Codes, Stephanie M. Berkland

Masters Theses 1911 - February 2014

This research compares the energy performance of a code-built residential building within the moist climate zone classification in Canada, Europe, and the Northeastern United States. The primary objectives are to reveal how specific differences in code requirements in similar climates influence a building’s energy profile, offer a means to quantify and evaluate the extent of energy savings as a result of each requirement, and provide a comparison of each location’s building culture and how this affects the standards in place.

Using the building energy simulation tool, DesignBuilder EnergyPlus Simulation, a model single-family home was created and input energy ...

Learning And Becoming In Design Reviews, Lisa D. McNair, Marie C. Paretti, Cassandra Groen 2014 Virginia Tech

Learning And Becoming In Design Reviews, Lisa D. Mcnair, Marie C. Paretti, Cassandra Groen

Design Thinking Research Symposium

Drawing from the prior work of McNair and Paretti (2010), this study investigates how language practices and design artifacts mediate the interactions among novice and expert designers to shape the nature of design, and specifically design learning. By analyzing data collected from two design courses in different fields, this study addresses two research questions: 1) how do language practices mediate the interactions between design mentors and design learners; and 2) how do design artifacts mediate these interactions between mentors and learners? Drawing on activity theory and discourse analysis, we use these questions to explore how students work with experts to ...

A Transient Community For A Transient Lifestyle, sameh mohamed ibrahim 2014 Virginia Commonwealth University

A Transient Community For A Transient Lifestyle, Sameh Mohamed Ibrahim

Theses and Dissertations

The project suggests an alternative means for living in Qatar. It proposes the development of a transient, floating community a man-made, transitory archipelago of floating housing units located at the ‘soon to be abandoned’ docks a short distance from the Museum of Islamic Art and the Doha Corniche. The design, through a variety of bespoke dwelling options, can provide both more and less nomadic housing to accommodate a variety of dif- ferent lifestyles and social units. Clustered around three permanent islands (containing a cultural/activity center, three adaptable ‘work-unit’ towers, and a park/commercial area), the design provides a wide ...

Utopia In The Apocalypse: Creating A Framework Of Survival Systems, Bryan E. Toepfer 2014 University of Massachusetts Amherst

Utopia In The Apocalypse: Creating A Framework Of Survival Systems, Bryan E. Toepfer

Masters Theses

As medicines continue to evolve, as well as our tendency to misuse and abuse them, viruses become more and more resilient. While the flu is largely an inconvenience which at its worst may result in a missed day of work, it bears the risk of returning to the days of old when it was a terminal disease. With the imminent risk of resistant super viruses emerging,New York Cityhas taken precautions to prepare for the worst case scenario. If deemed necessaryNew Yorkhas plans to completely quarantine and isolate the city from the world. This provides us with the perfect opportunity ...
