Co-Creation: A Study Of Intimacy And Control, 2014 Virginia Commonwealth University
Co-Creation: A Study Of Intimacy And Control, Erin Brooks
Theses and Dissertations
Drawing from ongoing revitalization initiatives in Richmond, Virginia, this adaptive reuse project creates a structured dialogue between public and private expression to create a more immersive gallery experience for viewer and practitioner. The gallery experience is twofold; traditional object-based display and nontraditional process-based display. Preservation of the historic fabric of the existing Handcraft building at 1501 Roseneath is integrated with the transformative potential of introducing voyeuristic opportunities in creating a community arts center. Notions of voyeurism will center around ideas of visual connection and physical separation. This project questions if tactics of voyeurism, which inherently create physical barriers, can facilitate …

The Steel Yard, Architecture Department, Sculpture Department, Bruner Foundation
Rudy Bruner Award | 30 Years of Urban Excellence
The Steel Yard redeveloped a historic steel fabrication facility into a campus for arts education, job training, and small-scale manufacturing in Providence, Rhode Island. The 3.5-acre property in the city’s Industrial Valley required extensive environmental remediation to meet regulatory requirements while retaining the industrial urban character of the site. The Steel Yard offers classes, workforce training, and fabrication space for local artists, creating an industrial arts incubator where they can share ideas, materials, and space. It has become a center for creative activity, bridging the gap between the traditional arts community on the affluent east side of Providence with manufacturing …
A New Focus For The Future: Historic Preservation Practices And Vocational High School Curriculum, A Massachusetts Concentration, 2014 Roger Williams University
A New Focus For The Future: Historic Preservation Practices And Vocational High School Curriculum, A Massachusetts Concentration, Duane D. Houghton
Historic Preservation Theses
Graduates of vocational high schools account for the largest group of trade professionals in the construction and remodeling industry. The various concentrations provide prospective graduates with the skills, knowledge and education they need to succeed in the industry. After graduation former students are prepared to hold several different jobs in the industrial, commercial and residential areas; some work as independent contractors for various clients and projects, while others may be hired by firms on an ongoing basis.
The issue exists that although these types of vocational schools are producing valuable assets to the community they seem to promote construction and …

Visual Harmony In Relation To Camp Santanoni: User's Perceptions And Interpretations Of Visual Harmony Between Historic Rustic Architectural Design And The Natural Environment Based On Recommendations Made By Downing, Olmsted And Wicks, Nina L. Caruso
Historic Preservation Theses
The purpose of this study is to understand how users of Camp Santanoni perceive and interpret the visual harmony between historic rustic architectural design and the natural environment and if these meanings are congruent with the design recommendations from Downing, Olmsted, and Wicks. The main goal is to understand the congruent relationships between how a designer wished to achieve visual harmony between buildings and landscapes, and how people actually perceive this interaction. The meaningful relationships between users (the people) of Camp Santanoni’s buildings and the surrounding landscape (the place) were documented.

A Cultural Heritage Management Methodology For Assessing The Vulnerabilities Of Archaeological Sites To Predicted Climate Change Focuing On Ireland's Two World Heritage Sites, Caithleen Daly
Doctoral
The affect climate change will have on cultural heritage preservation poses a global challenge and is being addressed by international organisations such as UNESCO and ICOMOS. The aim of this doctoral research is to assist heritage managers in understanding the implications of climate change for the sites in their care. The potential future effects of climate change on cultural heritage in temperate climates are discussed and current international practice in the management of climate change impacts on cultural heritage is investigated. …
Historic Preservation Law In A Nutshell, 2013 University of Connecticut
Historic Preservation Law In A Nutshell, Sara Bronin, Ryan Rowberry
Sara C. Bronin
The purpose of this book is to provide a concise, coherent reference for the emerging field of historic preservation law for lawyers, policymakers, planners, architects, and students alike. We consider preservation law to be “emerging” because it began to fully develop in the United States only in the last fifty years. Two key transition points happened at the federal level: the 1966 passage of the National Historic Preservation Act and the 1978 Penn Central Supreme Court decision, which upheld a landmarks law against a constitutional challenge and consequently encouraged other localities to adopt similar ordinances. (Of course, this book covers …

A Study Of The Aiken-Rhett Stew Stove, 2013 Clemson University
A Study Of The Aiken-Rhett Stew Stove, Julia Anne Tew
All Theses
The stew stove found in the kitchen of the Aiken-Rhett House in Charleston, South Carolina is a rare and well-preserved example of antebellum stew stove technology. This masonry stove was installed in the main kitchen of Governor William Aiken in 1858 and contains six cast iron stew holes and a set kettle. Masonry cook stoves appeared in the United States as early as the mid-eighteenth century. Stoves like this were not an American invention. A French device known as the potager is the predecessor and inspiration for such devices. This potager eased the cook's labors in preparing meals and offered …
Creating Tradition: Change Ringing And The Myth Of The 'Holy City', 2013 Clemson University
Creating Tradition: Change Ringing And The Myth Of The 'Holy City', Charlotte Hewitt Causey
All Theses
This thesis analyzes the recent creation of tradition surrounding church bells and bell towers in Charleston, South Carolina. Church bells have been a significant feature of Charleston’s aural landscape since the mid-eighteenth century when St. Michael’s hung a ring of bells in the tower that still dominates the intersection of Meeting and Broad Streets. The histories of four churches, St. Michael’s (1751), the Cathedral of St. Luke and St. Paul (1811), St, Matthew’s Lutheran (1867), and Grace Episcopal (1846) affirms the important role that bells played for these congregations. The bells installed in these churches and the uses to which …
